Public sociology is a contextual discipline responding to globalisation. The course draws on the experiences of public sociologists throughout the world and involves teaching by academics from a range of disciplines in which public sociology is relevant. Lecturers are engaged in research, education and activism with various public groups.

The debate regarding sociology’s public face was again revitalised by Mills (1959) who, acknowledging a gross depreciation in the social lifeworld, offered a critical assessment of his field, which had abandoned its public calling, instead becoming captivated by the power and prestige (including resources) offered by academia. Public Sociology takes sociological knowledge and skills beyond the confines of the academy into the communities where these resources are much needed.
